Orientation Weekend 2008

The First Year Orientation Weekend Away is a great time to meet other first year students, their spouses and families. It is also a chance to meet the members of the Moore College faculty away from the formality of the lecture theatre, as well as some students from other years at college.

What happens on the weekend

Unlike your usual work-til-you-drop weekend away, we plan to spend lots of time relaxing and enjoying life by the shores of beautiful Port Hacking. If you can imagine the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the expectant chatter of new friendships forming, the rich experience of Christian fellowship, morning bible talks, some casual games of sport, some helpful workshops about life at college, and an engaging kids programme - then you'll fit right in! You'll have a chance to ask all those questions you've wanted to ask but haven't yet. Oh - and you'll be pleased to know - it's a Greek-free zone!

If you are married then the weekend is especially important for your spouse, so that they can meet other spouses and feel part of the college community. A creche and an excellent kids program is provided during the morning sessions.

On Saturday afternoon we have organised to open the campsite waterslides.

A provisional timetable for the weekend is available here.

Can I come part time?

We strongly encourage people to come for the whole weekend - especially for spouses who are working and won't be able to be involved much during term time. This is a great way to get to know the people you will be studying with over the next 1-4 years.

However, we understand there will be some commitments that will make this impossible. If this is the case, please consider coming for just the day. Have a look at the timetable above and look at what sessions will be most helpful. Saturday morning is the most important time in getting a feel for what is involved in college.

Is there a children's programme?

During the morning sessions we run a children's programme from baby creche upwards.  For children aged 4-12 we have the team "Left Overs and Bugle" (Neil and Elizabeth Willis) who have been running this event for over ten years.

We are very thankful that they can join us again this year. All leaders involved in the children's programme sign a 'Working With Children' declaration form as part of our Child Protection Procedures.

How do I get there?

Anglican Youthworks
Port Hacking Conference Centre

(about 45-60 minutes drive from college)

Maps will be available on Friday of Orientation Week. We will also have worked out room allocations by then, so when you arrive at the site you can go straight to your rooms.

Driving Instructions:
Follow the Princes Highway 1 km past Sutherland and turn left into Farnell Ave, the Royal National Park. (As guests you are not required to pay the park entrance fee - please inform Park representatives that you are going to the Youthworks Centres). Follow the road over Audley Weir, and continue for another 2km. Turn left into Warumbul Road (a dirt road), and after 2km turn left again and follow the signs to Rathane. Travelling time is about 1 hour from Moore College.

Please note: the gate to Warumbul Rd is locked between 8:30pm (10:00pm Fridays) and 6:30am. If you need to arrive/leave outside these hours you must make prior arrangements for an orientation committee member to meet you and let you in/out

Can I get a lift down there?

There's plenty of people going down that have spare seats in their cars - even for those that come down just for the Saturday.  Let us know this and we'll do what we can.

On the registration page there is an option to indicate that you'd like us to contact you about this.  We will be organising this during Orientation Week (please don't be stressed that you have not been contacted before then!).
